Mombasa Go-Kart in Shanzu operates a 500-meter floodlit circuit where 10-minute sessions typically cost around KES 1,500. This facility serves as a central hub for adrenaline seekers near Bamburi Beach, offering more than just traditional karting. While many tourists flock to the coast for the ocean, this inland track provides a mechanical alternative involving 200cc karts and powerful 650cc buggies. The site is located approximately 15 kilometers north of the Mombasa city center, making it a feasible afternoon trip for those staying in the North Coast resorts.
The main asphalt circuit stretches across half a kilometer and is designed with enough technical corners to challenge experienced drivers while remaining wide enough for beginners to find their line. Unlike the indoor tracks found in many European cities, this outdoor arena deals with the coastal humidity, which can significantly affect tire grip during the afternoon. I suggest visiting after 6:00 PM because the temperature drops and the floodlights create a much more intense racing atmosphere. The 200cc four-stroke engines are well-maintained and provide a punchy response on the short straights, though the heavier karts require a bit of muscle to steer through the tighter hairpins.
Safety standards at the facility align with international recreational racing protocols. Every driver is provided with a helmet and a brief safety orientation that covers flag signals and throttle control. The pit crew is remarkably efficient at adjusting pedals for shorter drivers, ensuring that teenagers can reach the controls safely. If you are particularly tall, ask for one of the newer frames which offer slightly more legroom. The steering wheels are quite stiff, so expect a bit of a workout for your forearms over a back-to-back session.
For those who find flat tarmac too predictable, the off-road track offers a completely different physical challenge. This separate circuit is designed for 650cc buggies that handle dirt, mud, and uneven terrain with ease. These vehicles are much louder and more aggressive than the standard karts, requiring a firm hand and a willingness to get dusty. The track layout changes slightly based on the season, as heavy rains can create deep ruts that add to the difficulty level. I find the buggies more satisfying than the karts because the suspension travel allows you to take much more creative lines through the dirt corners.
The facility is more than just a racing track; it functions as a sports bar and family hangout area. A large viewing gallery overlooks the main straight, allowing non-drivers to track lap times via a digital scoreboard. The onsite restaurant is famous for its charcoal-grilled chicken and pizza, which many locals visit for even if they have no intention of driving. On weekends, the atmosphere changes as local racing enthusiasts gather, which might lead to longer wait times for a session but also provides a more competitive environment to watch.
Beyond the engines, the center has expanded to include a dedicated paintball arena and an archery range. Paintball sessions usually require a minimum group size, so it is best to call ahead if you are traveling solo or as a duo. The equipment is standard, with protective vests and masks provided. Archery is a quieter alternative located at the far end of the property, offering a steady pace compared to the roar of the engines nearby. Prices for these activities are separate from the karting fees, so check the current combined ticket deals if you plan to stay for the whole afternoon.
Accessing the track is straightforward as it sits just off the Malindi Highway. Taxis and tuk-tuks from the Bamburi hotels should cost very little, but always negotiate the fare before starting the journey. The facility usually opens around 11:00 AM and stays active until 10:00 PM. I recommend bringing a change of clothes if you plan on using the off-road buggies, as the red coastal dust tends to cling to everything. The staff are generally relaxed about session times, but during the December peak season, everything runs on a strict schedule due to the high volume of visitors.
A standard 10-minute session for adults costs approximately KES 1,500, while sessions for children are usually priced slightly lower at KES 1,000. These rates include helmet rental and a basic safety briefing before you enter the pit lane. Prices are subject to change, so checking their official site or calling ahead for group discounts is advisable.
Walk-ins are generally welcome on weekdays, but booking is highly recommended for weekend evenings or if you have a group larger than six people. The facility is a popular spot for birthday parties and local corporate events which can occasionally block out the entire track for several hours. A quick phone call can confirm if there are any private bookings that might interfere with your arrival time.
Children must usually be at least 8 years old to drive the standard karts, though there are smaller junior karts available for younger participants starting around age 5 or 6. Safety is the primary concern, so the staff will often perform a quick check to see if the child can comfortably reach the pedals and operate the brakes. For the 650cc off-road buggies, drivers typically need to be older or accompanied by an adult in a double-seater.
Karting sessions on the asphalt track are usually suspended during heavy downpours for safety reasons as the slick surface becomes too dangerous for high-speed turns. However, the off-road buggy track remains operational in light rain, and many people actually prefer the muddy conditions for a more authentic experience. If the weather is uncertain, wait for the coastal showers to pass, as they are often brief and the track dries quickly in the Kenyan heat.
Lance Ochieng Great place for Motorsport loving people. Small kids can also have a go at the Go-karts with the help of the staff. And on a lucky day, like me, you get to share your lunch with fellow primate from the wild.

Jerko Jalsovec I am Bond. James Bond. Karting is fast. Good cars. Good track. Zip line is only for people below 75kg. This sucks. James Bond was the best driver that day.
